Parishes throughout the Diocese of Corpus Christi celebrated the patronal feast of the diocese—the Feast of Corpus Christi—with processions on Sunday, May 29. Bishop Michael Mulvey celebrated Mass at the Cathedral and then led a procession of the faithful around the block of the Cathedral grounds.
In his homily, Bishop Mulvey said that from its early days the Church has celebrated the Eucharist—the Body of Christ. Christ's words at the Last Supper to follow in his footsteps and to do so in remembrance of him are done in every church in the world. But Christ's words, the bishop said, do not only call us to Mass to observe Eucharist, they command us to leave the church service and continue in Christ's footsteps by serving our brothers and sisters.
"The early church continually memorialized, not only the Last Supper but also Christ's sacrifice on the cross," Bishop Mulvey said.
He said that "we are all broken" and it is in this broken state that "we truly appreciate the Eucharist" and come to appreciate that the Lord broke himself for us on the Cross to "show us the infinite mercy of God."
"Jesus wants us to remember that we go after the service (Mass) to serve our brothers and sisters," the bishop said. It is a sign of Christ's life for us to give ourselves in service to others.
"Our sacrifice for others is a continuation of Jesus' sacrifice," Bishop Mulvey said. "Whenever we are in service to others, we experience Jesus' own sacrifice for us."
He said that we live in this world but are not of this world. "Our eyes are set on the world yet to come," he said. "Let us recommit ourselves to service."
Bishop Mulvey said, "Our lives of Christian commitment only begins within these walls. It is nurtured and nourished within these walls as receive the Eucharist, but it is pointed to service to those who are far from God" outside these walls.
