Two officials from the City of Corpus Christi Storm Water Division spoke to Incarnate Word Academy Middle Level students in Marci Levings’ sixth grade language arts class on Oct. 1.
Environmental Quality Specialist Kori Ellien and Environmental Services Superintendent Waly Fernandez-Lopez discussed the origin of the city’s drinking water and factors that affect water quality, storm water, and water conservation.
The presentation is part of a post-reading activity in Levings’ classroom. The students recently finished reading a novel by Linda Sue Park titled “A Long Walk to Water,” a true story about two 11-year-olds in South Sudan who faced hours of walking and hardship to find water and safety.
“Students should be making connections to better understand the global water crisis and how they can conserve and eliminate pollutants in the water we use,” Levings said.
In addition, the City of Corpus Christi storm water officials demonstrated a few of the city’s water testing methods and provided a visual on storm water runoff.
During Pope Francis’ recent visit to the U.S., he asked the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 25 to take firm action to protect the environment.
“Any harm done to the environment, therefore, is harm done to humanity,” Pope Francis said.
