The Diocese of Corpus Christi warmly welcomes Pope Francis' Letter of Sept. 1, on the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy that will be celebrated Dec. 8, 2015 - Nov. 20, 2016.
In the Letter, the Holy Father draws our attention to the abundant mercy of God extended to all. He encourages all to practice mercy with others and to participate in receiving mercy, especially in the coming Jubilee Year.
Pope Francis calls on us to extend mercy to others by performing the traditional Spiritual and Corporeal Works of Mercy. He urges us to receive God's mercy and extends the Jubilee Year Indulgences to the sick, to the incarcerated, to those who make particular pilgrimages, and to those who perform the works of mercy.
In wanting to re-emphasize God's mercy in various ways, he reminds priests of the ability that they possess to forgive "the tragedy of abortion." The pope teaches that "the forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented, especially when that person approaches the Sacrament of Confession with a sincere heart in order to obtain reconciliation with the Father."
In communion with Pope Francis and the universal Church, and led by Bishop Michael Mulvey, the Diocese of Corpus Christi looks forward to observing this Year of Mercy with joy. Preparations are already under way for various celebrations throughout the Diocese of Corpus Christi during the Holy Year. More details will follow as plans are finalized.
With Pope Francis, we entrust ourselves to Mary, the Mother of Mercy, as we prepare for this special year of witnessing to and generously sharing God's mercy.
