Sister Margaret Heese died on Jul. 21, 2023, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, at 91. She was born on September 26, 1931, as one of eight siblings in Robstown and baptized in St. John’s parish.
Sister Margaret entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on June 17, 1947, and received the name S. Margaret Bernard. She professed Final Vows on Jan. 23, 1955. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s from Northern Arizona University. In her 76 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered for 33 years as a teacher in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Oklahoma, Robstown (Texas) and California.
In 1985, she left teaching for parish work. She served as a director of religious education inSt. Therese Parish, Corpus Christi, from 1988-89 and at Most Precious Blood Parish from 1990-2000.
In 2001 she returned to the motherhouse and served her sisters with her expertise as a seamstress. There was no mending or alteration request she did not fulfill with care and skill. She remained active until a few months before her death.
Sister Margaret was a generous and talented woman who gave unstintingly and lovingly of her gifts. An excellent teacher, she was also an artist. Combining her talents, she created items such as aprons, baby quilts, and cloth dolls for the sisters’ gift shop, all made with an eye for beauty.
Her wake and burial will be held at the Motherhouse in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, on July 26 and 27.
