Bishop Michael Mulvey and Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman both emphasized the need for judges and attorneys to adhere to the law, but to have compassion for those standing before them in courtrooms at Thursday's Red Mass in the Corpus Christi Cathedral.
The Red Mass, which dates to 13th century England, has the name because the celebrants wore red vestments, symbolizing the fire of the Holy Spirit's guidance to all who pursue justice. The Cathedral was nearly full at last night's celebration and attendees included judges and some state officials from throughout the Diocese of Corpus Christi.
During the homily, Bishop Mulvey asked the judges to consider three things: who is the person in front of them and is he made in the image of God, is their own house is in order before passing judgment and could they see hope in the person.
Guzman spoke about a passage from Amos 5:24 which states "but let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream."
"The bible combines both law and spiritual guidance. Worship without justice is meaningless. We must fight for justice," Guzman told the congregation.
