On Wednesday, June 24, Bishop Michael Mulvey blessed a new adoration chapel and altar at Our Lady of Assumption in Ingleside. It was the culmination of a dream of the parish pastor, Father Thomas Wellar, and the congregation.
In June 2013, a conversation amongst Father Wellar and parishioners concluded that there was a need for an adoration chapel. Later that month, the first Adoration Chapel meeting was held. The Knights of Columbus Council #11570 of Our Lady of Assumption accepted the responsibility of overseeing the construction and completion of the project.
The parish came together, decisions were made, a consensus was reached and the design of the chapel was finalized. Through the generous donations of the parish community and countless hours of labor from a couple of dozen men of Christ, the project started to take shape.
To those associated with the project it seemed to take an eternity at times and at other times felt as if they had just blinked. Land was cleared, the plot was prepared, the construction of the exterior then the interior of the chapel was done, and finally, the anxiety of the final inspection by the City of Ingleside.
On March 2, Father Thomas Wellar announced to the congregation that the Adoration Chapel was finished and open to the public.
The Adoration Chapel now stands as a place of worship, prayer, serenity and hope for the current generation as well as generations to follow.
For now, the Adoration Chapel at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church is only available during the daylight hours. Soon, however, security measures will be in place and the Chapel will be open 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.
Once Bishop Mulvey blessed the Adoration Chapel and the altar, Father Wellar began offering daily mass in the Adoration Chapel.
