"The immigration problem is getting worse and other tragedies unfortunately have closely followed a relentless pace," he said in a message.
"For our hearts is difficult to accept the deaths of these brothers and sisters who dare to do exhausting journeys to escape tribulation, poverty, wars and conflicts are often linked with international standards," the pope said.
The pope said he was spiritually present "to mourn with those who are injured and pull flowers prayers in suffrage for women, men and children who are victims of a tragedy that seems to have no end."
The tragedy "demands to be confronted not with the logic of indifference, but the logic of hospitality and community in order to safeguard and promote the dignity and centrality of every human being," he said.
He called on all Christians and people of good will to continue helping those in need "taking them by the hand, without calculation, without fear, with tenderness and understanding."
