Sisters of the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament held a celebration in honor of their Mother Provincial, Sister Leo Puthussery, SABS, who celebrated her golden jubilee of religious profession this year.
Sister Leo traveled from India for the occasion and the sisters hosted the event with a Mass of Thanksgiving, concelebrated by Bishop Michael Mulvey, Vicar General Msgr. Louis Kihneman, III and Msgr. Seamus McGowan in the chapel at the Sacred Heart Adoration Convent on Sept. 29.
About 50 guests, including friends, family, neighbors, benefactors and staff from Catholic Charities shared in the joyful occasion.
"Rosy responded to God's call to religious life in the congregation of the sisters of the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in 1961 and received the name Sister Leo," Sister Rose Madassery, SABS, operations manager of the Mother Teresa Shelter, said.
She made her First Profession as religious sister on May 28, 1965. She received her bachelors in education and studied theology at Gregorian University in Rome.
"Mother Leo was a teacher for 25 years and director of novitiate for five years. She was also the local superior and finance officer for more than 10 years. She was elected vicar provincial twice and now serves as our Provincial Superior. All the sisters here at our convent, in one way or another, have fond memories of her," Sister Rose said.
In his homily, Bishop Mulvey spoke of the journey of ministry and religious life. "In the beginning of our ministry we want to give ourselves…then we realize, it is not our ministry. We have to bring the person of Jesus Christ," he said.
Afterwards Bishop Mulvey thanked God for Mother Leo and for her 50 years of service to the Church and for nourishing the souls of the sisters of her congregation in Corpus Christi.
Mother Leo in turn thanked Bishop Mulvey for his support and the love he has shown to her and the sisters.
Guests were treated to songs, sung by the sisters from their native India, making it a culturally rich celebration.
