Farrah Gauthreaux, a parishioner at St. Mary Star of the Sea in Aransas Pass, wants only the best for her young daughter. She knew this would mean strengthening her faith in God through the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Gauthreaux, 21, along with approximately 100 other confirmandi and their sponsors from around the Diocese of Corpus Christi, gathered at Corpus Christi Cathedral on Saturday, March 9, for a standing-room-only Adult Confirmation Mass concelebrated by Bishop Michael Mulvey and Bishop Emeritus Edmond Carmody.
During his Homily, Bishop Mulvey called upon those about to be confirmed to look for the Holy Spirit around them in everything they do.
Growing up, Gauthreaux didn’t attend Mass regularly but was baptized Catholic. As a teenager, she became curious about her faith and convinced her mother to enroll her in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC) program.
“My sister and I both went through the program and received our first communion together. After a year or two of doing the program together, my sister was old enough to get confirmed and join her regular class,” she said. “But following my sister’s confirmation, I began to stray away from my religious path for outside circumstances that affected the strong relationship I had with God.”
Gauthreaux stopped going to RCIC classes and church altogether.
Today, she is a college graduate and mother who wants to set a good example for her daughter while solidifying her faith.
“God has blessed me in amazing ways, and I neglected my relationship with Him. I knew I wanted God and the Church to have a big presence in our lives, so I returned to Mass with my daughter. A few months after her birth, she was baptized; I knew then that I wanted to take the steps necessary to receive my Sacrament of Confirmation,” she added.
