IWA Middle Level Assistant Principal Marci Levings revealed two paintings on Sept. 30 the school received for winning the Houston Zoo’s 2015 and 2016 Action for Apes Challenge. The paintings were created by some of the Houston Zoo’s primates.
In addition, students who donated more than 10 used cell phones for the challenge received a free T-shirt designed by Levings and seventh grader Catherine Cutbirth. The students collected used cell phones to help the Houston Zoo protect animals like chimpanzees and gorillas. These animals live in areas where materials such as coltan are mined for the use in cell phones.
“We are planning on participating in the Action for Apes Challenge again this school year,” Levings said. “Participation in this challenge is a loving example of how our students respect the worth of every person and for life in all its forms.”
