Incarnate Word Academy’s boys varsity track and field team captured the TAPPS 3-4A district meet held at San Antonio Christian High School this weekend. The team earned 154 points to score the championship.
The girls varsity track and field team placed second at the district meet with 156 points. Junior Maggie Pesek broke her school record in the pole vault competition.
“I am very proud of both teams,” IWA Coach David Rodriguez said. “Almost all of our athletes set personal records. They ran with heart and competed to the very end.”
IWA boys results
In the boys 200-meter finals, Austin DeGaish finished fourth (23.74) and Aaron Spillar finished seventh (24.65). In the boys 400-meter finals, Jaran Cadena finished first (52.40) and junior Vincent Morin finished third (52.58). In the boys 800-meter race, Jaran Cadena finished first (1:59.37), Vincent Morin finished third (2:03.00), and senior Jason Simank finished sixth (2:06.60).
Senior Jackson Bright finished first (4:29.04) in the boys 1600-meter race, while sophomore Jared Coco finished third (4:31.76), and sophomore Christian House finished fifth (4:43.08). In the boys 3200-meter race, Jackson Bright finished first (9:54.53), Jared Coco finished third (10:06.65), and Christian House finished fifth (10:24.95).
In the boys 110-meter hurdles, junior James Matl placed third (18.73) and senior Alex Gonzalez placed seventh (20.74). In the 300-meter hurdles, James Matl finished fourth (45.19) and Alex Gonzalez finished eighth (48.17).
The IWA Boys Varsity Team placed fourth (45.63) in the 4x100 relay, fourth (1:35.17) in the 4x200 relay, and first (3:32.04) in the 4x400 relay.
Out in the field in the 12 lb. shot put finals, senior J.L. Bronold finished first (44-07.75), senior Jacob Garza finished eighth (38-02.25), and senior Zach Martin finished 14th (33-07.25). In the discus finals, J.L. Bronold finished first (133-04), Jacob Garza finished sixth (116-03), and Zach Martin finished 11th (103-04).
In the boys high jump finals, Vincent Morin placed seventh (5-06.00), while Cesar Hernandez and Alex Saldana tied for ninth (5-02.00). In the pole vault competition, Alex Gonzalez placed sixth (10-00.00), while sophomore Harrison Longwell and senior Jacob Clark tied for seventh (9-06.00).
In the boys long jump, Vincent Morin placed third (19-02.50), Aaron Spillar placed 10th (17-04.00), and Jaran Cadena placed 13th (17-01.25). In the triple long jump, J.L. Bronold placed third (38-04.25), Alex Gonzalez placed sixth (36-11.00), and sophomore Ethan Elizondo placed seventh (36-05.50).
IWA GIRLS
In the girls division, freshman Justine Guzman placed eighth (13.92) in the 100-meter finals and seventh (28.99) in the 200-meter finals.
Junior Ashley Zawicky placed fourth (1:06.01) in the 400-meter finals, while junior Cassidy Faught placed fifth (1:09.80), and senior Madison Longwell placed eighth (1:15.40).
In the 800-meter finals, Cassidy Faught finished second (2:34.73), sophomore Hanna Rodriguez placed 10th (2:51.38), and freshman Cristina Madero finished 12th (3:00.86).
Sophomore Samantha Simank placed first (5:31.52) in the 1600-meter finals, while sophomore Madeleine McCutchon placed third (5:42.89) and sophomore Christina Matl placed fourth (5:47.05). In the 3200-meter finals, Samantha Simank finished first (12:21.65), Madeleine McCutchon finished third (12:34.98), and Christina Matl finished fifth (12:54.84).
Junior Gabrielle Garcia placed third (17.72) in the 100-meter hurdles, while freshman Ellis Martin placed eighth (22.28). In the 300-meter finals, Gabrielle Garcia finished third (51.72) and senior Kanya Maliwan finished seventh (56.63).
The IWA Girls Varsity Team placed fifth (54.53) in the 4x100 relay, third (1:55.67) in the 4x200 relay, and first (4:18.83) in the 4x400 relay.
Out in the field in finals, sophomore Bianca Valderrama finished first (31-06.75) in the 12 lb. shot put competition and first (99-10) in the discus competition. Freshmen Megan Santillan placed eighth (67-06) and senior Dodie Heredia placed 13th (49-04) in discuss, while freshman Amber Cox finished fourth (4-06.00) in high jump.
In the pole vault finals, junior Maggie Pesek finished first (8-06.00), Cassidy Faught finished third (7-00.00), and Amber Cox finished fifth (6-00.00).
Madison Longwell placed fourth (14-04.25) in the long jump finals, while Justine Guzman placed (eighth) and senior Hayley Sanchez placed ninth (13-05.00).
In the triple jump finals, Amber Cox finished second (32-00.00), senior Kayla Dural finished seventh (29-06.50) and Gabrielle Garcia finished eighth (29-06.00).
