Thirty-six students from Holy Family School participated in the Block Kids competition at Garcia Elementary School on Jan. 30. The competition coincided with National Catholic Schools Week.
Holy Family's fourth grader Reese Perez won 1st place and second grader Chelsea Titler won 2nd place in the local competition.
"Students use their creativity in constructing a structure, building, or object out of 100 Lego pieces. Block Kids allows our students to use their imagination in creating a story about their structure, and verbally tell the story to a judge," Maria Elena Zavala, principal at Holy Family School said.
Since September, Holy Family students have been meeting once a week after school with Zavala.
Students were provided with questions that were asked of them when they competed. "Over the last three years, our numbers have increased and have grown from 15 to 36 students," Zavala said. "It was an amazing opportunity to see how well our students can use their imagination. I am very proud of all our students participating."
Presently there are 18 students from second grade, four students from third grade, 11 students from fourth grade and three students from fifth grade in the Block Kids Buiding Program, which is part of National Association of Women in Construction NAWIC's Education Foundation.
The Block Kids Program introduces children to the construction industry in an effort to create an awareness of and to promote an interest in future careers in one of the many facets of the industry. The program in non-discriminatory and as such is open to all elementary school children in grades one through six. All eligible children must participate through a recognized sponsor.
