Fun Day group at Catholic Charities supports Cancer Awareness

The Fun Day group at Catholic Charities Office of Ministry and Life Enrichment, their caregivers and staff wore pink, danced, jiggled, walked and prayed in support of Cancer Awareness Month on Oct. 19.
 
"Our Fun Day group is like family, they have been meeting every week for many years," Celia Mendez, Director of the Office of Ministry and Life Enrichment, said.
 
Rosie Garcia from ZuMama Fitness led attendees in a Zumba class. Even those unable to stand waved their arms and swayed to the music. Mendez signed for the hearing impaired while Marie Lopez led the group in prayer for people suffering from cancer and their families.
 
Connie Cano spoke of her own experience with the disease and shared her feelings and faith with the group. "Connie has a child with special needs, so most of the clients knew her–like family," Mendez said. "Our Fun Days are very spiritual and we are one big family."
 
The Fun Day group made donations to Barbara Little, a representative of CHRISTUS Spohn's First Friday free mammogram screening program. "First Friday provides mammograms for those who don't have insurance or who can't afford it," Mendez said.
 
Clients Michelle Willard and Christopher Ortiz received a ribbon for wearing the most pink, while about 75 participants shared a meal with pink desserts.
