Packing suitcases, choosing what to keep and what to give away – Sister Megan Mary Thibodeau has been busy the last few weeks. She leaves Corpus Christi after ten years as General Sister Servant on Saturday. Her new destination will lead her to a new shore: as the first of her community, she will work for the Vatican.
With her winning smile and a twinkle in her eyes, Sister Megan looks forward to this new adventure: “I am excited.” The Italian language is not unknown to her, but she has to brush it up: “I have lived there for four years in the Subiaco Valley, close to Assisi, around 25 years ago,” she shares. Now, she will be living in Rome – and since the SOLT community doesn’t have a house there yet, she will stay at a place with religious from different U.S. congregations currently studying in Rome.
Her work will be mainly in English, though: “I will be working at the State Department of the Vatican, in the English section,” she says. Currently, Cardinal Pietro Paolin is the Secretary of State. Sr. Megan will be helping with the correspondence, translations, and greetings of English pilgrim groups from time to time. She will be working with the Papal Foundation, too.
She leaves her work as General Sister servant after ten years – two terms. “It was the right time now; I gave the community what I could give,” she said. Her successor, Sr. Mary Aloysius of Jesus Kim, will be an excellent leader to the SOLT Sisters – right now, there are 107 sisters in 7 countries; 10 young women are in formation.
Before embarking to Italy on September 10, Sr. Megan will attend a retreat and visit her family in Connecticut. She will be missed here in Corpus Christi, where the SOLT community has its headquarters – but everyone is looking forward to her live updates from the Eternal City!
