Lent is a privileged time to deepen our relationship with God. One good way to do this is to learn more about the roots of our faith. For example, in this Jubilee Year of Hope, Bishop Mulvey has prepared seven installments of a study series that help us better understand the virtue of hope, and Lent is the perfect time to start it.
The first two videos focus on the Second Vatican Council's document Sacrosanctum Concilium: The Constitution on Sacred Liturgy. The following two videos will explore Dei Verbum: The Word of God and its impact on liturgy and our personal lives. Finally, the last three videos will feature Fr. Peter Marsalek, SOLT, discussing Gaudium et Spes: The Church in the Modern World and the significance of being Christian in today’s world and society. Each video and the accompanying reflection questions can be found on the Diocesan website, diocesecc.org/lent.
Bishop Mulvey emphasizes the importance of knowing these essential documents, as he explains how the liturgy is a communal prayer: “As we celebrate the Eucharist, Christ enters us, and we enter into him. There is an exchange: It’s not just me begging God - we are there for an exchange with God.” God’s mystery of saving us in the Paschal mystery of death and resurrection makes us “the Body of Christ, not just a person of Christ.”
Experiencing the Church eventually makes us hopeful because “we are not satisfied with what we have here, rather, we know where we are headed.” This study series is a great way to prepare to live the Paschal Mystery in a complete and conscious way: “I die with Him, I’m buried with Him, so that I can rise. And that is again what hope is. If I have died, I will rise”, which we can already experience in this life.
You can follow the series on our Diocesan website diocesecc.org/lent or the Diocesan’s YouTube channel. On our website, you will also find a study guide with questions for reflection. Consider joining a group in your parish to share about the videos and study together!
