Bishop Michael Mulvey celebrated the Silver and Gold Anniversary Mass on Feb. 12 at Corpus Christi Cathedral. Twenty-nine couples celebrated their silver anniversary, and 60 commemorated their golden anniversary. Additionally, three couples have been married for 60 years, and one took their vows 65 years ago.
Deacon Fred Castillo, Family Life Evangelization Coordinator with the Diocese of Corpus Christi, helped plan this Mass that consistently attracts several couples who are recognized for their enduring commitment to their partners, their families, and the sacrament of marriage.
“If you were to add up all the years these couples have been married, it is a total of 3,790 years of marriage,” said Deacon Fred. “How awesome is that?”
Following Mass, a reception was held in St. Joseph Hall in Corpus Christi Cathedral, where Bishop Mulvey visited with the couples and family members and enjoyed several photo opportunities. Couples who registered early received a special certificate from Bishop Mulvey recognizing their silver or golden anniversary.
Francisco and Cleo Flores, parishioners at Most Precious Blood, have been married for 65 years. They were glad to be a part of such a special event. Cleo offers her words of wisdom when asked what made her marriage so enduring.
“Be kind in everything you do for him as you do for yourself,” she said. “Accept each other and be forgiving; it will last a lifetime if you believe in Jesus.”
World Marriage Day is celebrated every second Sunday in February.
