Catholic Charities Hosts Event For Persons With Disabilities

Kathy Schulz relishes any opportunity to give her daughter Jenna, 18, a chance to socialize with other young adults like her and she is appreciative to Catholic Charities for hosting. weekly events for those with disabilities, where everyone can enjoy fun activities surrounded by people who understand each other’s unique circumstances.

On February 23,  persons with disabilities and their family members not only participated in Mass and ash distribution with Bishop Emeritus Edmond Carmody, but it was a fun-filled day featuring crafts, lunch and other fun activities.

“Whenever we walk through the doors of Catholic Charities, we are received with open arms and that’s a beautiful feeling,” Kathy Schulz said. “If it’s been six months since they’ve seen us or they just saw us last week, it’s always the same warm and loving welcome.”

Celia Mendez, Community Outreach Services Department Director at Catholic Charities, said holding events like these are important for the entire community.

“It brings us all together as One Body of Christ. Our families are grateful this program is available for their family member with disabilities and they look forward to it every Wednesday,” she said.

Mendez added the next major event (and their most popular) is the annual Father Walsh Summer Camp on June 6 and 7th at St. John Paul High School.

“Sister Letizia and I are blessed to have many generous donors and faithful volunteers who share their time and talents with us every single week,” Mendez said. “Together, we try to provide a safe place of inclusive work, play, worship, community, and more for our entire community.”
