Ten men in the Diocese of Corpus Christi are currently on the journey to the permanent diaconate. While the road leading to their calling as deacons is challenging, it is also filled with many memorable moments. One of these was the Institution of Lectors at the Mass of the Conferral of Ministries, celebrated by Bishop Michael Mulvey at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Parish on Sept. 30.
The Institution of Lectors entrusts each candidate to study and proclaim the Word of God at Holy Mass. The moment of conferral is presented in a way that underscores the importance of scripture and the role it plays in the ministry of these future deacons. Each candidate knelt before Bishop Mulvey and was given a Bible. Each candidate accepts the responsibility of exemplifying the message of salvation through prayer and proclamation of the Word.
Study and mediation of the Word of God is an essential part of each candidate’s formation. It also equips them with the knowledge and abilities to proclaim the Gospel and deliver homilies with words that will educate and inspire those who listen. This love for God’s scripture also enables each candidate to serve their respective parish communities with humility, mindful that they will always be seen as beacons of light, committed to service and prayer.
As each candidate stood holding the Bible given to them by Bishop Mulvey, it marked yet another milestone for each one of them as they continue their journey to the permanent diaconate. Now, serving as lector infuses their formation with a deeper connection to the Word, one that was celebrated by their wives, friends and family who were on hand to offer their dedication, prayers, and support.
