Bishop Michael Mulvey of the Diocese of Corpus Christi has called that a portion of the diocese's annual Disaster Relief Collection scheduled for Sept. 17-18 be used to assist victims of the recent flooding in Louisiana. The floodwaters have claimed numerous lives, destroyed thousands of homes and left thousands of families feeling isolated and fearful.
The collection is set aside to support disaster relief efforts throughout the year. It has been used to assist with recent disasters. In July 2015, the diocese sent $110,000 to the Diocese of Austin to assist people impacted by the flooding in Wimberly. In December of last year, the Diocese of Corpus Christi sent $ 48,658 to tornado victims in the Dallas area.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has also called for an emergency collection to assist victims of the recent flooding in Louisiana from dioceses throughout the nation. USCCB president, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, called for solidarity with the victims and invited Catholics to generously help those in need. The funds collected will support humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA and provide support to Catholic dioceses impacted.
