It was a solemn moment – a Mass dedicated to the Holy Spirit, the bishop, priests, and deacons dressed in red, and the cathedral filled with family members and friends. Seventy-nine adults from 15 different parishes were confirmed by Bishop Michael Mulvey, receiving the Holy Spirit through this sacrament.
In his homily, Bishop Mulvey told the candidates that they would be tested and encouraged them to be faithful to the Lord and give witness when asked on Monday, “What did you do this Saturday?”
“What’s the meaning of life?” he asked. “Be in love with Love.” The keys to a meaningful life are the commitment to love God with your whole heart, your whole soul, and your whole mind (see Mt 22:37) and to love one’s neighbor.
“We live in a bad world because we live in a world that does not love God,” the bishop continued. There are many substitutes – addictions – that cannot fulfill us. Also, the apostles had to give up things to follow God. But finding God is not only something for each one personally: “Friends and family want someone to open the door to God.” He encouraged them to speak to God and Jesus. However, “you can’t do it alone:” The Holy Spirit “can be your best friend, not just today, but every day, 24/7.” His fruits are joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, self-control, gentleness and faithfulness, and a life with God starts with “simple acts of kindness, at home, in the office, at school, at the grocery store.”
