Bishop Michael Mulvey opened 24 Hours for the Lord at the noon Mass in the Corpus Christi Cathedral today. The 24 hours will go through the noon Mass on Saturday, March 5.
"It is a time for concentration on two very important sacraments in our lives as Catholic Christians," Bishop Mulvey said, referring to the Eucharist and confession or reconciliation.
"Both are centered on God's mercy," Bishop Mulvey said.
He asked, "Have we been merciful to others? In the depth of our beings, do we know what mercy really is?"
He suggested that the faithful examine the seven capital sins, which are rooted in original sin and "cause us to sin against God and one another." The seven capital sins are pride greed, gluttony, lust, sloth, envy and anger or wrath.
The bishop urged everyone to confess their sins often during this Year of Mercy.
The 24 Hours of the Lord at the Cathedral will include confessions on Friday from 1-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m.–noon. It also includes a number of other devotions such as Station of the cross, Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet.
