Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14 this year, and marks the start of the 40 days of preparation before the celebration of Easter. Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence, which allows us to simplify our lifestyles so that we can be freed from distractions to hear and respond to God’s continued call to conversion and holiness.
Everyone is invited and welcome to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday.
“Following the instructions of the Holy See, we declare that the obligation both to fast and to abstain from meat, an obligation observed under a more strict formality by our fathers in the faith, still binds on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday,” - National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return.”
